DESCRIPTION:Please join Kaufman County Republican Party for a  presentation on Human Trafficking in Texas. Our special guest speaker will be Tom Smith\, Assistant Attorney General in the Special Prosecutions Division of the Texas Attorney Generals Office. \nTom Smith serves as Special Assistant to the Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice in the office of Attorney General Ken Paxton where he works to inform members of the public\, community organizations\, and local leaders of General Paxton’s efforts to fight human trafficking\, as well as other initiatives within the criminal justice division. In 2019\, Tom served as Assistant Attorney General for Outreach. Prior to these roles\, Tom served as Counsel and Policy Advisor for Legislative Affairs in General Paxton’s office\, where he was instrumental in helping to pass the bill banning sanctuary cities as well as key pieces of human trafficking and religious liberty legislation. \nBefore joining the Attorney General’s office\, Tom served as General Counsel to State Senator Ken Paxton after working as counsel in the corporate world for private and public companies in the Dallas area. Tom began his career as a law clerk for the Honorable Thomas Moyer\, Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court before joining the multinational law firm of Jones Day in their Dallas office. He is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Law and the University of Texas School of Public Affairs. \nTom is also a musician\, having recently recorded a studio album of original music in 2018. He is also the author of a book\, The Long Way Home\, a fictional story of a cat that survived a monster hurricane and found his way back home. Tom lives in Frisco with his wife Audrey\, two stepchildren\, Cole and Katherine\, and two cats\, Ike\, Jr. and Sebastian. \nHuman trafficking is modern-day slavery. It is the exploitation of men\, women\, and children for forced labor or sex by a third-party for profit or gain. \nTexas is on the forefront of combating this hideous crime. Transfer of Care of Law Enforcement Animals Amendment\nDescription:Allows for transfer of law enforcement animals to handlers or others if in animal’s best interest\n\nA “yes” vote supports this amendment to allow for the transfer of a law enforcement animal\, such as a dog or horse\, to the animal’s handler or another qualified caretaker if the transfer is in the animal’s best interest.\nA “no” vote opposes this amendment to allow for the transfer of a law enforcement animal\, such as a dog or horse\, to the animal’s handler or another qualified caretaker if the transfer is in the animal’s best interest \n3. Cancer Prevention and Research Institute Bonds Amendment \nDescription:Authorizes the legislature to increase bonds for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute\n \nA “yes” vote supports this amendment to allow the legislature to increase the maximum amount of bonds for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas from $3 billion to $6 billion.\nA “no” vote opposes this amendment\, thereby keeping the maximum amount of bonds for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas at $3 billion. \n4. Increase Distributions to School Fund Amendment\nDescription: Increases distributions to the state school fund \nA “yes” vote supports this amendment to increase the amount of revenue from $300 million to $600 million that the land board is permitted to transfer from the permanent fund to the available school fund each year.\nA “no” vote opposes this amendment\, thereby keeping the amount of revenue that the land board is permitted to transfer from the permanent fund to the available school fund each year at $300 million\n \n5. The time will remain the same. \nKaufman County Republican Party will hold its first Executive Committee Meeting of 2019 at a new location. \nIt will be begin at 7pm in the meeting room of Kaufman County Library\, 3790 S Houston St \, Kaufman Texas 75142 \nWe encourage everyone to join us! \nOur guest speaker will be Justice David Schenck. \nJustice Schenck was appointed to the Court by Governor Perry and took the oath on January 16\, 2015. He comes to the Court after nearly a quarter century in private practice and prior government service. His law practice concentrated on complex civil\, criminal\, and family law litigation\, typically in the appellate and pre-appellate context in courts throughout Texas and the United States. He led the Dallas Issues and Appeals Practice of Jones Day and\, more recently\, the national Specialized Litigation\, Advanced Motion Practice of Dykema Gossett. \nHe also served as Deputy Attorney General for Legal Counsel from 2010 to 2012. In that capacity\, Justice Schenck functioned as Chief Legal Counsel to then Attorney General Greg Abbott\, having direct responsibility over six divisions of that office: Opinions\, Public Finance\, Open Records\, Grants Administration\, General Counsel\, and Legal\, Technical Support. He also led the team defending the Legislature’s plans redistricting the State’s House\, Senate and Congressional delegations. He is Board Certified in Civil Appellate law. While in private practice he received the highest possible “AV” rating by Martindale Hubbell and was repeatedly selected for inclusion in the Texas Monthly’s “Superlawyers” and D Magazine’s best lawyers surveys. He has also received the Texas Bar’s highest honor – the President’s Award – for his pro bono work promoting access to legal services for the poor. Justice Schenck has previously served on the adjunct staff of the Southern Methodist University School of Law. Beginning in the Fall of 2015\, he will teach Texas civil procedure at University of North Texas College of Law. \nJustice Schenck graduated from Baylor Law School in 1992 as valedictorian and having served as editor-in-chief of the law review. Following his graduation he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Henry A. Politz\, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals\, Fifth Circuit.
